Akwa Ibom Deputy Governor Resigns before Impeachment Proceedings Could be Concluded

Akwa Ibom State deputy governor, Mr. Nsima Ekere, has resigned from office. The Deputy Governor, was said to have played a fast one on the members of the State House of Assembly who were reported to have perfected plans to impeach him.

He announced his resignation about 6 p.m. Wednesday 31st October, 2012, after news of the moves to impeach him was confirmed by a reliable source. The letter of resignation signed by the Press Secretary to the Deputy Governor, Mr. Inemesit Ina, said that “The Deputy Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Mr. Nsima Ekere, has resigned from office.”

The two-paragraph letter to Governor Godswil Akpabio reads: “Pursuant to Section 306 (5) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended), I kindly notify you of my resignation from the office of Deputy Governor of Akwa Ibom State forthwith on personal grounds… I want to thank you immensely for the opportunity to serve Akwa Ibom State and wish you and the good people of Akwa Ibom State well in the remaining years of your administration.”

Meanwhile, it was gathered that as many as 20 members in the 26 member House of Assembly had already signed the article of impeachment of the deputy governor. His resignation followed the orchestrated moves by the state House of Assembly to present the article for his impeachment today. The decision to resign it was learnt, was apparently aimed at avoiding the negative constitutional impediment of an impeachment that could jeopardise any political ambition of his in the future

Boko Haram Can’t Force Me Out Of Office – Governor Yakowa

Gov. Patrick Yakowa of Kaduna State on Thursday said that he would not resign his position because of the spate of bombings by Boko Haram sect in the state.

Yakowa said this at the PDP National Headquarters in Abuja while fielding questions from newsmen.

The governor said that the state government was on top of the situation, adding, “let me say to you out rightly that I will not resign. There is absolutely no reason for me to resign.’’

“We are on top of the security challenges we are facing in Kaduna State,’’ the governor stressed.

He said that the state government was working with the Federal Government and security agencies to ensure the security of the state.

Yakowa, who visited the party’s National Chairman, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, said that there was no part of the world that was not faced with security challenges.

He said that he was at the party`s headquarters to interact and consult with the party`s leadership as a loyal party member.

He said that his visit to the headquarters was to enable him understand of the party`s rules and regulations to ensure proper implementation of such.

“You can only do that if you regularly come to the party’s headquarters and interact with the leadership.

“I can say to you that I have benefited tremendously from the visit and I will come more often,’’ Yakowa said.

Earlier, Governor Aliyu Wamakko of Sokoto State, who also visited the leadership of the party, said that PDP governors were not at war with the leadership as was being insinuated in some quarters. (NAN)

Enugu - The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has introduced voter education clubs in secondary schools in Enugu State, an official said.

In an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Enugu on Monday, the Resident Electoral Commissioner in the state, Dr Lawrence Azubuike, said the essence was to inculcate in school children the concept of voting.

Azubuike said that the commission met with 142 principals of public schools on the issue and that the principals were enthusiastic about the concept.

``The purpose, as I said, was to solicit their effort and to get their assistance in establishing voter education clubs because the focus now is to the children even when they are not of voting age, if they imbibe the culture and the ideals of democracy and the electoral process, it will stand them a very good stead when they become adults and when they attend the voting age; so the effort is to catch them young.

``But as I said, it was well attended, well received and the process is still on. Some principals have started; they have started the process of establishing those clubs in their schools.”

Azubuike said that the commission would not fund the clubs but would assist and facilitate them.


He said that some INEC staff would visit the schools from time to time to encourage the children.

Military Warns About Likely Terror Attacks In Borno During Muslim Holiday

… Curfew In Potiskum After Intelligence On Arrival Of Foreign Mercenaries

SAN FRANCISCO, October 22, (THEWILL) – The military in Borno State has issued a warning on likely massive terror attacks in the state during the Eid el Kabir Sallah holidays which starts on Thursday through the weekend.

The military said it has intelligence that foreign mercenaries have been coopted by the Boko Haram for the planned attacks.

The Spokesman of the Joint Task Force (JTF), Lt. Col. Sagir Musa in a release said the plan involved targeting the military and civilians.

“Information available to the Joint Task force, Operation Restore Order indicates that the Boko Haram terrorists are planning massive attacks on military and civilian targets during Eid el Kabir Sallah period.

“Consequently, the terrorists group has invited foreign mercenaries to assist them in launching the attacks. The group has also advised members of the public to store enough food items and other routine household requirements as they believe that the JTF will impose curfew on Maiduguri in the event of breakdown of law and order.”

The JTF thus advised members of the public to report suspicious persons and activities to security agencies.

Meanwhile, in a related development, the government of next-door Yobe State today slammed a curfew on Potiskum, the state’s commercial hub following the breach of security and the killing of scores last week by members of the Boko Haram.

Yobe State Governor, Alhaji Ibrahim Gaidam approved the curfew that will run from 4.pm to 7.am daily, beginning from today.

According to a press statement by his Special Adviser, Press Affairs and Information, Alhaji Abdullahi Bego, “the imposition of restriction of movement in Potiskum town begins from today Monday 22nd October 2012 from 4.00PM to 7.00AM daily.”

He said the decision was taken following a meeting that the governor had with heads of law enforcement agencies in the state and it is designed to ensure the protection of life and property and the maintenance of law and order.

“His Excellency the Governor urges all Potiskum residents to cooperate with security agents as they continue in their effort to ensure peace and security in Potiskum and around the State.

“The Governor also extends his heartfelt condolences and sympathies to the families of those who were killed by criminal gangs and those whose properties were burnt in Potiskum over the last few days. His Excellency assures Potiskum residents and all the people of the State that his administration will do everything within its power to assist and partner with the security agencies to maintain law and order and protect the life and property of the people.”

Mimiko Dedicates Victory To Ondo People As PDP Plans Probe

Gov. Olusegun Mimiko of Ondo State on Saturday dedicated  his victory in Saturday’s  governorship election to the people of the state.

 

 

 

The governor, who spoke at the Government House in Akure shortly after he was declared winner, expressed gratitude to the people of the state.
He pledged that he would continue to work harder in the pursuit  of good governance  in order to justify the confidence reposed in him.
The PDP, however,  said  it would  set up a committee to investigate  alleged  cases of electoral fraud in the Ondo State governorship election.
Reacting to the return of  Gov. Olusegun Mimiko for another four-year term with a total vote haul of 260,199, the party said that investigation of the cases would  enable the party to decide on whether to seek redress at the Election Petition Tribunal.
The PDP Publicity Secretary in the state, Mr Ayo Fadaka on phone said that  security was not adequate in the rural areas.
“ The security provided by the government was not adequate in the rural areas. We are compiling the list of  towns and villlages affected in the state,’’ he said.
Fadaka also  alleged that INEC did not conduct any election  in two wards in Ilaje local government areas, and that the ad hoc staff did not turn up.
“ We will definitely   seek redress  if  there are enough reasons from our investigations,’’ he said.
The Ondo State Chairman of the ACN, Chief Olorunshola Adesoji, however, refused to comment on the outcome of the election.
He told  NAN on phone  that he was unaware of the outcome of the governorship poll and was not in a position to comment.
